The Pride of Kanha
The Barasingha, also known as the hard-ground swamp deer, is the living symbol of Kanha National Park and a remarkable conservation success story. Once on the verge of extinction, this graceful species was saved through dedicated protection efforts in Kanha and is now found almost nowhere else in the wild.
Recognised by its majestic antlers with multiple tines (often up to twelve), the Barasingha moves elegantly across Kanha's open meadows and sal forests. Early mornings and late evenings offer the best chances to witness herds grazing peacefully against mist-covered grasslands — a sight that truly defines the beauty of Kanha.
