The Ultimate Guide to Packing for your Kanha Safari

Planning a safari in Kanha National Park is an exciting endeavor, but knowing what to pack can be the difference between a comfortable experience and an itchy, sunburned one. Central India's climate can be extreme—biting cold in the mornings and scorching hot by noon.
1. The Palette: Earth Tones
In the wild, you want to blend in, not stand out. Bright colors like red, yellow, or white can startle wildlife and attract insects. Stick to olive greens, khakis, browns, and dull greys. Not only does this help with camouflage, but these colors also hide the pervasive fine orange dust of the Kanha tracks.
2. Layering is Key
Winter safaris (November to February) start in near-freezing temperatures. You'll need a heavy jacket, gloves, and a beanie. However, by 10:00 AM, you'll likely be down to a single layer. Wear layers that are easy to peel off and stow away in the safari gypsy.
3. Essential Gear
- Binoculars: A 8x42 pair is ideal for Kanha's dense forests and wide meadows.
- Sun Protection: High SPF sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, and polarized sunglasses.
- Dust Protection: A buff or scarf to cover your nose and mouth during dry spells.
- Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are a must. High-quality hiking boots or sturdy sneakers work best.
“The forest doesn't care about your fashion, it cares about your silence and your respect for the territory.”
Remember, Kanha is a plastic-free zone. Please bring reusable water bottles. At Hideaway, we provide filtered water so you can refill before heading out on your drive.
